Stephanie Powers grew up on the rocky coast of southern New England and attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. After graduating in 1973 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, she moved to Washington DC and turned her attention to a career in business. She was only intermittently engaged with art over the years.
After retirement in 2018, Stephanie turned again to her passion for painting. She set up a studio in her home and began taking commissions for Pet Portraits and Home Portraits. More than 30 of her recent works are of beloved pets, primarily dogs. Her approach to the Home Portraits is to avoid “architectural renderings” and instead to reveal the homes as places of warmth, full of memories. Most include family members, some who have passed on, as well as dogs and children. At this point, she has painted more than 75 works, using acrylic on gesso board. Her style is contemporary realism.
In addition to the commissioned work, Stephanie enjoys painting images that appeal to her. These are often florals and landscapes, many defined by brilliant, penetrating sunlight. She has always been fascinated with how a shaft of sunlight can define an object. Stephanie enjoys drawing and experimenting with graphics and works occasionally in different media, like wood block prints. These are some of her larger works.
Stephanie lives outside of Washington DC in Arlington, Virginia. She enjoys traveling, and frequently returns to her native New England. Recent wanderings include Mexico, Hawaii, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Amsterdam, Cologne, Strasbourg, Colmar, and the Outer Banks.
