Kathy Belcher has worked with a variety of media over the years - fabrics, inks, acrylics, paper, watercolor, collage and now cold wax and oil paints. In February, 2020, she was introduced to painting with cold wax and oils while on vacation. The one and a half years of Covid quarantine allowed her time to research and explore the medium.
Artist Statement
A lifelong learner/explorer/crafter, without formal art instruction, I've learned through workshops, Beverly Street Studio School and online classes.
I constantly challenges myself to try different painting styles, subject matter and techniques. Due to its slow drying time cold wax allows time to explore, change and complete my thoughts. I can work on a series of paintings and after a couple of hours return to the first painting to add more layers. One day I may be interested in a color statement and the next an arrangement of texture.
Most of my paintings have their roots in my passion for the natural world. My current art reflects not a specific realistic replication but a representation to which I have brought and the viewer can bring their own interpretation, feeling and consideration. The inspirations for my work primarily come from nature with its different facets as well as reflecting images of her real or imagined travel.
