I paint outside because unexpected things happen constantly. I begin with an idea of light and composition, but as I paint the world is shifting and changing around me, and those changes bring possibilities for excitement and surprise. I always want to communicate light, whatever the subject, and I do that through careful consideration of values, color and paint application. Sometimes I carry my initial idea through to the end, but often something that happens during my time painting that takes me in a different direction. It comes down to noticing; the smallest things can make a painting special. The honing of observation is what I find exhilarating and is what keeps me going back outside for more.
